Savana Signatures

Innovation For Transformative Education

Year of Implementation: 2020

Background

Persistent low learning outcomes at the basic education level remain a critical challenge in Ghana, as in many developing countries. Recognizing the transformative potential of technology, Savana Signatures with support from Oxfam Ghana implemented the Innovation for Transformative Education (ITE) Project in Sawla and Kpandai districts. The initiative aimed to enhance teaching and learning through ICT integration, fostering active, participatory education while improving academic performance.

Strategy

The project adopted a multi-tiered capacity-building approach:

Teacher Training:

  • Forty (40) teachers (12 female, 28 male) trained in using Koombooks for lesson preparation, design, and delivery.
  • Forty-four (44) teachers (30 female, 14 male) equipped with skills to integrate Ideas Box (a digital learning toolkit) into lessons.
  • Forty-four (44) educators trained in using educational games to make learning more interactive and effective.

District-Level Capacity Strengthening:

  • District Teacher Support Team (DTST) members trained to replicate ICT integration training for other schools.
  • Ghana Education Service (GES) district staff upskilled in e-safety, active teaching methodologies, and ICT-aided instruction to ensure sustainability.

Device Management & Sustainability:

  • Twenty-four (24) participants (twenty (20) teachers, two(2)GES officers, two(2) DTST members) trained in device maintenance to prolong the lifespan of school ICT tools.

Key Highlights

  • Improved Digital Pedagogy: Teachers now use Koombooks, Ideas Box, and gamified learning to enhance engagement.
  • Scalable Model: District-level training teams ensure continued ICT integration beyond project schools.
  • Gender-Inclusive Impact: 72% of trained female teachers actively applying digital tools in classrooms.
  • Measurable Academic Gains: Increased student pass rates linked to tech-enabled teaching methods.

The ITE Project successfully demonstrated how strategic ICT adoption can drive quality education reform in underserved Ghanaian communities.
