Teaching With Impact (TWI)

Year of Implementation: 2020

Background

Globally, 250 million children, half of whom have attended school for at least four years, fail to acquire basic literacy, writing, and numeracy skills, with vulnerable populations disproportionately affected. In Ghana, this crisis stems from limited opportunities and poor-quality practice exercises in schools. To address this, Edukans and Savana Signatures launched Teaching with Impact (TWI), targeting 81 basic schools across Northern, North East, and Volta Regions. The project aims to transform learning environments into safer, more responsive spaces by equipping teachers with innovative tools like Correctbooks (reusable writing materials) and learner-centered methodologies.

Strategy

TWI’s approach centers on capacity building and resource provision to drive systemic change. The project built the capacities of 324 teachers and 81 headteachers in active teaching methodologies, with a focus on literacy, numeracy, and handwriting. Training emphasize hands-on use of Correctbooks to enhance engagement and skill retention. Regional and district officers (3 Regional Training Officers, 6 District Training Officers, and 30 SISOs) ensure scalability and sustainability. By combining teacher training with innovative tools, TWI addresses both pedagogical gaps and resource shortages, creating conditions where learners can thrive.

Key Highlights

The TWI project has already delivered measurable improvements in target schools

Enhanced Teaching Capacity

  • Trained 324 teachers and 81 headteachers across all 81 schools in active learning methodologies, with 85% adoption rate observed in classroom practice.
  • 30 School Improvement Support Officers (SISOs) now monitor and reinforce these methods district-wide.

Improved Learning Outcomes

  • Literacy & Numeracy Gains: Post-intervention assessments show 40% improvement in foundational skills among participating learners.
  • Handwriting Progress: Use of Correctbooks reduced writing material costs by 60% while improving legibility for 75% of students.

Systemic Impact

  • Zero Dropout Rates achieved in 65% of schools during the project cycle.
  • Gender Equity: 90% of girls retained in target schools, supported by inclusive teaching practices.
