Yikpabongo CHPS in the Mamprugu Moagduri District in North East is transforming community healthcare, setting an amazing example in improving the health and well-being of its people. With the support of the USAID/ASBC Activity, the enthusiasm among the health staff and the community has been ignited, empowering them to take charge of their own health.
In June, health staff at the CHPS organised a school health service at the Mugu DA Primary to offer vitamin A supplements to children between 12 months to 5 years. Each child also received a comprehensive physical examination from head-to-toe, to identify any health concerns. The staff also attended to children with wounds, providing them with proper treatment and dressing.
The team also offered counselling and support to the pupils beyond their physical health.
Acknowledging the vital role played by healthcare professionals, the Community Health Management Committee (CHMC) has taken the lead in renovating a three-room structure within the community to house a midwife and other CHPS staff.
The self-help initiative forms part of efforts by the community to create comfortable and convenient living spaces for health staff, ensuring their availability to provide timely and emergency services to community members, particularly pregnant women
These initiatives are part of the implementation of the Community Health Action Plan, facilitated by the ASBC Activity, with support from Ghana Health Service and Savana Signatures as a consortium member of the FHI360-led project.
Ms. Ethel Emefa Ehla, the Programme Manager for Savana Signatures, commended the commitment demonstrated by the Yikpabongo CHPS zone and the collaborative efforts of the health staff, community members, and the CHMC.
“The commitment shown by the Yikpabongo CHPS zone and the collaborative efforts between the health staff, community members, and the CHMC are truly inspiring,” She stated, adding “this community is setting a remarkable example for the transformation of community healthcare”.
The five-year ASBC Activity aims to support communities in 17 districts across northern Ghana in prioritising healthy behaviours. Through actively seeking, identifying, and implementing locally driven solutions to health challenges, the project seeks to encourage positive health outcomes.
Savana Signatures is leading the implementation of the ICT component of the project, which seeks to enhance the uptake of antenatal and postnatal services, family planning, sexual and reproductive health, as well as nutrition and WASH practices among thousands of people in beneficiary communities.
In North East and Northern Region, Savana Signatures is also supporting other consortium partners in the Community Engagement for Health and Wellbeing.
Ultimately, this project aims to assist communities in adopting and prioritising healthy behaviours, thereby achieving improved health outcomes.
